WANT!
Figures I’d hear about Peg Bracken six months after her demise in 2007. She was indeed the original Bad Home Cook.
Such a kindred soul was she that I put out a search warrant for a copy of her I Hate to Cook Book. Alas, it was long out of print, and searches for it on the various online booksellers used and new - came up with naught.
One reader even offered to send me her mother’s old copy. How could I? I politely declined.
Now come to find out the book has been reprinted for its 50th anniversary. It actually came out in July, but I wasn’t paying attention — the very character trait that so vexes my cooking.
Can’t wait to get my copy. Stay tuned for my version of Bracken’s infamous stay-a-bed stew…
Seriously. The last camera phone camera I'll ever take for this blog.
It’s Friday. Time for link love.
According to Beverage World, the U.S. beer market has dropped 2.1% in the last year, the third year of decline. (And I thought I was doing my part to keep sales up. Huh.) But American craft beer sales are up 7%. Guess that means we’re finally demanding the good stuff.
But here’s my real question: Can I wear my Billy Beer baseball hat to the Los Angeles Craft Beer Crawl Sept. 25? Surely it’s moved from simply bad taste into the kitschy by now, right?
Speaking of delicious liquids, did somebody say rosewater? I’ve had a bottle of this stuff sitting in my pantry forever. Finally some idea of what to do with it besides using it as aromatherapy when struck down by vapors.
More sweet stuff: It’s really true: you haven’t lived unless you’ve eaten a fresh date. It’s like candy, only creamier. And much better for you than a Snickers. And they’re in season now. Get thee to a farmer’s market.
So are peaches. But only just. Better make this now: peach shortbread.
Rosh Hoshanna is coming up next week! I’m gonna make this Moroccan beet salad (or try anyway). And also this peach noodle Kugel.
